What do we do on a McLaren service?

McLarens require high-quality maintenance to retain their looks, reliability and performance. Service history has a big impact on the value of the vehicle, especially when selling a McLaren or exchanging for a new model. Below is a brief outline of the work that takes place on the main services.

1st, 3rd, 7th, 9th and 11th services (annual): engine oil, genuine engine oil filter and brake fluid.

4th, 6th, 8th and 10th services (40,000 miles): engine oil, genuine engine oil filter, engine coolant, clutch oil change with filter and seal change, gearbox oil change with transmission filter, brake fluid, and charcoal canister replacement on the 10th service.

5th and 15th services are the 20,000-mile services.

Whilst servicing McLaren vehicles we only use genuine parts and oils that meet or exceed the manufacturer's standards.

Please contact us for a quote if your McLaren SLR requires spark plugs as part of its service.

07

Vehicle health checks

At SBR Engineering we conduct a detailed health check on every car serviced at our facility. Our technicians carefully examine each vehicle, documenting any issues or points of interest with photos or videos, which are digitally recorded in our cloud-based system so the vehicle's service history is kept up to date. For customers who are not present, we can share visual evidence of any concerns that may need to be addressed.

As one of the UK's premier performance car experts, we have in-depth experience with McLaren vehicles, enabling us to detect potential issues early, before they develop into significant problems. Our health check process includes a version designed specifically for McLarens, following factory guidelines. This allows customers to make informed decisions about immediate repairs or future maintenance needs.

McLaren FAQs

How does McLaren respond to customer feedback regarding engine faults?

McLaren values customer feedback and actively uses it to improve their vehicles. Customer input regarding engine faults is taken seriously, and the company addresses reported issues through software updates, technical service bulletins and improvements in subsequent models.

Please contact us if you require service bulletin information for your vehicle or software updates.

Can McLaren road car owners modify their engines to prevent faults?

While some modifications may enhance performance, for cars still in manufacturer warranty it is crucial to approach engine modifications with caution. Unauthorised modifications can void warranties and may introduce unforeseen complications. McLaren recommends consulting authorised dealerships or the manufacturer before making significant modifications. For cars out of warranty we strongly advise a full inspection of the vehicle to assess the need for pre-emptive work, including upgraded components.

Is there a pattern or timeline for addressing engine faults in McLaren road cars?

McLaren, like any manufacturer, continuously evolves its models and addresses reported issues with a focus on improvement. The timeline can vary, but McLaren is committed to resolving issues promptly and ensuring subsequent models benefit from lessons learned.

How can McLaren owners stay informed about recalls and updates related to engine faults?

Owners can stay informed by checking for communications from the manufacturer, and from us here at SBR Engineering. McLaren typically issues notifications directly to owners, and authorised dealerships and ourselves can provide information on available software updates or improvements. Owners can also use the online portals provided by the manufacturer.

Are McLaren road cars reliable despite reported engine faults?

McLaren road cars are generally well regarded for their performance and improving reliability. While some models have encountered specific issues, the brand is committed to continuous improvement: it listens to customer feedback, implements software updates and introduces enhancements to ensure the reliability and longevity of its road car engines.

Can engine faults be prevented through regular maintenance?

Regular and proactive maintenance is crucial in helping prevent potential engine faults. Adhering to scheduled service intervals, conducting routine check-ups and promptly addressing any warning lights or unusual sounds all contribute to the health and longevity of the McLaren engine. However, we are still seeing excessive wear on older cars, even with a faultless service history.

Are engine faults covered under warranty for McLaren road cars?

McLaren provides a comprehensive warranty for its road cars, typically covering the engine and associated components. The specific terms vary by model and region. Owners should familiarise themselves with the warranty terms, as fixing faults not covered can be expensive. SBR are able to offer a warranty for McLaren models after a full inspection of the vehicle.

How has McLaren addressed engine faults in their road cars?

McLaren has been proactive in addressing reported engine faults. When issues arise, McLaren's engineering team release software updates, implement improvements in subsequent models and offer solutions to affected owners. Unfortunately the dealer network has not always delivered the customer service the manufacturer might have hoped for.

Regular maintenance and adherence to service schedules play a crucial role in preventing potential issues. Here at SBR we are able to offer the same software updates if needed, with our factory diagnostics.

What are some common engine faults reported in McLaren road cars?

McLaren road cars, while renowned for their high-performance engines, have experienced some recurring issues over the years. Common faults include the cooling system, electronic glitches and software-related issues. Some models have also faced overheating and engine misfires, which can be caused by mechanical failure.

Which McLaren models have been more prone to engine faults?

The MP4-12C faced teething problems related to electronic glitches and software, and the M840T engine in the 720S had occasional reports of overheating and misfires. Early versions of the M838T also suffered from valve train wear; this was addressed on later engines but still affects the earlier versions. Both engine versions have suffered from cylinder liner issues and even con rod failure.
