Brabham BT62

As supercar and motorsport specialists we played a pivotal role in preparing the first customer BT62 for competitive racing. The car, owned by long-time SBR client Paul Bailey, arrived with us in late 2020 and work began for the 2021 season.

Our involvement began with comprehensive testing and calibration to optimise the car as a race car. We fine-tuned the suspension, brakes, engine management and traction control to suit our customer and the intended racing environment. There were many changes needed, as the BT62 was not built to any homologation standard and was really a track day car; our attention to detail saw a complete strip and rebuild to make it suitable for racing.

We also provided trackside assistance and data analysis during the car's initial outings. The collaboration between Brabham Automotive, David Brabham and SB Race Engineering was key in transforming the BT62 into a race-winning machine.

After considerable modification we prepared and supported the car in the 2021 and 2022 seasons in the British GT Cup Championship. Drivers Paul Bailey and Ross Wylie racked up race wins, class wins and fastest laps in every race, but we were plagued with engine reliability problems. When the BT62 was on form it was untouchable.

We retired the car and ended SBR's involvement with the Brabham project in May 2022. We assisted with running the car in 2023, though not under the SBR banner, and the continued failures saw it enter one race only. Brabham Automotive lost the contract to build cars bearing the Brabham name that year. Still with persistent engine issues, the BT62 was withdrawn from racing after another brief run in 2024.

We are currently developing the car: it has been testing in 2025 and competed in a few races to monitor reliability. Watch this space.
